Hydration tips!
Optimal vocal hydration requires a long-term approach, as ingested fluids take several hours to reach the cellular level of the vocal folds.
How often should we drink water?
Drinking 2 to 3 L daily whilst avoiding iced water to prevent muscle constriction is the usual recommendation. Water should be room temp although drinking 2/3 litres a day is very unrealistic for many people. If you can maintain a certain level of consistency, I think that's a win! e.g., Drink a tall glass of water before bed and first thing in the morning.
Vocal Steaming?
Singers use personal steamers because drinking water does not directly touch the vocal cords; steam delivers external, topical moisture to soothe vocal folds, thin out sticky mucus, and reduce swelling.
How long does it take to hydrate the vocal folds?
It takes approximately 4 hours for the water you drink to hydrate your vocal cord tissues at the cellular level—so planning is crucial for important voice events.
